I had some pressed-back oak chairs sitting around in my workshop forever!! Someone gave them to me for free back when I’d never turn down free. (I’ve learned to be a little more discriminating in what I’ll take up valuable workshop space with.) They weren’t in good shape to begin with. The wood on the seats was split, and grew more so over months of sitting in the workshop. The legs had been chewed by a dog. Overall, completely yucky! But I have such a hard time throwing things away! I … [Read more...] about Chair Back Headboard and Giveaway!
… I’ve been inspired to make a clock. They’re cute and they’re funky, to useful from junky. Hickory dickory dock. (Okay, so I’m officially a big nerd.) So, here’s the story. Once upon a time, there was a sad cabinet door in the free pile at the Habitat Restore. His brothers were repurposed into new cabinet doors for a fantastic armoire, but his second life was to take on a little more unexpected a form. We’ve had a bit of success of late at a little boutique in town that sells some pieces for us, the latest of which was this wonderful hutch that Cara did a while back. But in a 500 square foot space, the loss of the hutch for display purposes in the store wasn’t going to cut it, so Cara and I started putting our heads together to come up with a good replacement on the quick. I had this hutch top sitting in the workshop for quite a while. I picked it up back at the Arizona Bloggers Tour … [Read more...] about French Country Hutch
I picked up a neat headboard and footboard combo at the thrift store the other day for $10, and thought they’d be perfect for a porch bench repurposing. I’ve been wanting to try and build one of these for a while now. I’m getting really BAD at remembering to take before pictures, but I stopped a little bit into the painting to snap a few pics so you could see the construction. As you can see, the back of the bench is the headboard (this one is a twin), and the front is the low … [Read more...] about Headboard Bench
A couple weeks ago, our neighbors who are moving had a yard sale. They had a dining table out for sale that didn’t end up selling at the yard sale. The morning after, they had it out front with a “Free” sign. I, of course, snatched it up. I forgot to take a true before picture, so this one was taken after I had already done a lot of the sanding on the top. The wood top was a light pine and the bottom was cream. You know when you finish a project and your just not “feeling it?” Or maybe a giant wind comes up and knocks something over and breaks it, so it’s back to the drawing board? This project was born of just such circumstances. And do you know what? Cara and I both agree it may just be one of our favorites so far. We had a pair el-cheapo side tables with really nice legs but ugly laminate tops. Cara did a great job fixin’ them up as best she could, but like I said before, we just weren’t … [Read more...] about Take Two! A Garden Bench
As I mentioned in my last post, I'm on the planning committee for my son's parochial school's big Spring Fundraising Gala, and I decided to throw my thrifty creativity toward creating some cool and different items for this year's Silent Auction at the event. The first that I committed to was the Tres Chic Play Kitchen. Then, this item came my way from someone on FreeCycle.org: Months ago, I saw Beckie at Infarrantly Creative make an adorable puppet theater from an old hutch/bookshelf … [Read more...] about Thrifty Theatrics of the Puppet Sort
This isn't a Twice Lovely project, but I thought you might be interested to see a furniture re-do that I did a while ago for my home. Our old tube TV had finally bit the dust, and after we did a little happy dance that we could now justify the purchase of a new flat screen HDTV, I started looking around for an entertainment center to house said flat screen. SHEESH!! Those things are pricey! Even at discount type stores, the kind I wanted with lots of storage and the place above the TV for the … [Read more...] about China Hutch Turned Entertainment Center
