One of the things I love about refinishing old furniture is the stories the pieces tell. They have a past. And that's part of the allure. They have bumps, bruises and scars. Sometimes the best course of action is not to restore a piece, but to embrace it's age and turn it's imperfections into assets. And that's exactly what I set out to do on this antique dresser that had character and charm to spare. A great way to give your refinished pieces authentic looking age is by layering your paint … [Read more...] about Heavily Distressed Teal Dresser
Phew! That’s a long title! And there’s a lot to cover here! First off, I’d like to give a big congrats to Heather for winning the Chair Back Headboard!! I’ve been teasing you with this fancy desk for ages, especially if you’re a Twice Lovely Facebook Fan. (And if you’re not, why the heck not?!?! You too can be privy to all the juicy, pre-blog sneak peeks.) Like many other pieces in my workshop, I picked it up right before the Christmas holidays came and struck me down for the count with morning all-day sickness. It might hurt some of you if I said how much I got it for, so we’ll just say “not enough.” ;) Check out this … [Read more...] about The Fancy Desk
I have a buyer for the white bedroom set I finished up just before the Camp Verde sale! Hooray! The lady who is buying the set for her little girl wanted to have the set distressed (since with kids, it gets that way no matter what you do!) I was more than happy to oblige. (Distressing makes me happy.) I also highlighted the harlequin pattern on the top of the side table with some soft green paint to match her room. (This was a detail I wanted to add before, but decided to keep it neutral to … [Read more...] about White Bedroom Set, Shabbied Up!
I’ve had this pair of chairs sitting in my workshop for quite a while. They were a gift from Diane, my friend with the proclivity to my metallic work. :) (She is the owner of the Metallic Secretary, the Antiqued Champagne Gold Nightstands, and the Palette of Metallics Set.) I loved the leg detail, but they sat waiting for just the right inspiration. SEE ALSO: Funky Harlequin Side Table Armoire, with a twist! Those of you who are privy to my Facebook previews saw when I picked up this great storage bench at Goodwill last week for $7.50. It was almost immediately claimed by my momma, who has been looking for something for at the end of her bed. SEE ALSO: Two-toned Freebie Dresser An Upholstered Arm Chair The front is hinged and opens up like a bi-fold closet door. It had a lot of great details going for it, but the huge knocker pulls were a little out of scale (and the end two … [Read more...] about My Mom’s Storage Bench
My good friend, Valerie, talked to me back when I did the Pirate Toy Chest about doing a Hope Chest out of the same kind of shipping crate for an anniversary gift for her husband for their 5th wedding anniversary. Valerie has gotten her husband a traditional anniversary gift each year of their married life, and the 5th anniversary (lucky for me) is the “wood” anniversary. :) The idea for the trunk was almost completely Valerie’s, and I hope I fulfilled her wishes for it. Their wedding bible … [Read more...] about An Anniversary Hope Chest
You may remember this fun armoire I redid a while ago? It was in fantastic shape when I got it, except for having no doors. A few weeks later, I came across yet ANOTHER great armoire with no doors, for the same low, low price of $15. Having been built up in my ability to fabricate some new doors from the first one, I snatched it up without a moment’s hesitation. I heart Diane. I first met Diane a few weeks ago when she emailed me to inquire about the Metallic Secretary. She came. She saw it. She LOVED it. It went home with her. She told me that she had a few other pieces at home that she wanted me to put my stamp on; a cabinet, a set of nesting tables, and a side table. She requested that they be done in a palette of metallics, using this lamp, this pencil cup, and these handles that she purchased (on clearance, she had me know) from Susan … [Read more...] about Palette of Metallics
